Bank vs. America: The 99% Prevails!

The Center for Story-based Strategy documented a major activism effort targeting Bank of America. smartMeme partnered with UNITY to create the “Bank vs. America” campaign, which culminated in a shareholders meeting demonstration in Charlotte, NC.

The action drew significant participation, with “over 750 marched and 100 activists went inside to tell their stories and ‘mic check’ CEO Brian Moynihan.” The crowds maintained a three-hour street occupation, resulting in six arrests for nonviolent civil disobedience. The event generated substantial media coverage, with over 900 news stories reporting on the action.

Campaign Focus

The organization framed Bank of America as problematic due to its leading role in home foreclosures, coal financing, and lobbying efforts. The campaign aimed to amplify grassroots organizing from communities of color and working-class populations.
