Checking-in to Prevent Checking-out

If you are working with other people to build a movement for social justice and liberation, then you probably find yourself in meetings—what, every once in a while?

A consistent dedication to fun or provocative check-in questions in our meetings helps us keep getting to know each other, and keeps space open for our whole selves to show up at work. Strategically chosen warm-ups and ice breakers can “help frame and inspire the coming conversation and help get everyone in the mood and mindset for the group work ahead.”

Design Considerations

Before crafting check-in questions, CSS considers:

  • Avoiding assumptions about family structures, experiences, or cultural backgrounds
  • Accommodating diverse class experiences
  • Recognizing potential cultural blind spots
  • Allowing participants to pass without pressure
  • Acknowledging that seemingly innocent questions “can be surprisingly triggering”

Sample Check-in Questions

The Center has assembled approximately 80 discussion prompts covering diverse topics including: personal appearance and experiences; hobbies and interests; technology and digital life; nature and seasons; memories and relationships; self-care practices; food preferences; and activism history. These prompts are designed to help movement workers stay connected, creative, and whole.
